Stars will soon be getting ready to hit the red carpet for this year’s Golden Globes – the ceremony that gets the awards season party started.
It comes with just a few weeks to go until Oscar nominations are announced, and A-listers including Timothee Chalamet, Emma Stone, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael B Jordan and Ariana Grande are among those expected to attend the event, which takes place in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, later today.
In the film categories, One Battle After Another, a comedy thriller starring DiCaprio as a washed-up revolutionary who returns to his old life when his daughter is kidnapped, leads the nominations with nine, followed by Norwegian comedy-drama Sentimental Value with eight, and vampire horror Sinners with seven.
- One Battle After Another – 9
- Sentimental Value – 8
- Sinners – 7
- Hamnet – 6
- Frankenstein – 5
- Wicked: For Good – 5
Adolescence and other British nominees
Unlike the Oscars, the Globes honour TV as well as film – and this year British drama Adolescence, about a boy arrested over the murder of a teenage girl from his school – is predicted to clean up in its categories, with potential wins for Stephen Graham and young star Owen Cooper.
In fact, there are quite a few British stars in the running in the TV categories, including Jason Isaacs and and Aimee-Lou Wood for The White Lotus, Jude Law for Black Rabbit, Matthew Rhys for The Beast In Me and Gary Oldman for Slow Horses.
In the film categories, Irish actress Jessie Buckley is favourite to win best actress in a drama for her performance as Shakespeare’s wife in historical drama Hamnet, and her co-star Paul Mescal is nominated for best supporting actor.
Cynthia Erivo is up for best actress in a musical or comedy for her performance in Wicked: For Good and Emily Blunt is in the supporting actress category for The Smashing Game.
Dame Helen Mirren and Sarah Jessica Parker will also be honoured with lifetime achievement prizes – and were even celebrated at their own ceremony earlier this week.
International film crossover
One thing to note this year is the crossover among the nominees in the best film categories and those shortlisted in the non-English language category – of the 12 films shortlisted for either best drama or best musical or comedy, four also feature in the non-English language group.
Though recent years have seen more breakthroughs, thanks to films such as South Korea’s Parasite, Mexico’s Roma and France’s Anatomy Of A Fall, such a wide crossover is unprecedented. It shows how non-English language films are becoming more and more popular – as well as perhaps the push for more diversity from the new Golden Globes organising body.
Last year was largely seen as a return to form for the Globes following an expose over a lack of diversity among its voting membership in 2021.
The ceremony was held in private and boycotted by celebs in 2022 and didn’t quite fully bounce back in 2023. The following year saw a fair few celebs, but the ceremony lacked its previous spark.
Tonight, however, is expected to be a star-studded event, with comedian Nikki Glaser returning to host after a successful debut in 2025. Let’s hope the celebs are ready for her…
The ceremony airs on the CBS network in the US and also streams on Paramount+. You won’t be able to watch legally in the UK – but don’t worry, we’ll be covering on Sky News.
The red carpet is due to start from about 10pm UK time, with the ceremony starting at 1am.
