As we’ve mentioned, while Prince Harry is a key player in bringing the case against Associated Newspapers, he is not the only claimant.
British music icon Sir Elton John and his husband, filmmaker David Furnish, are also among those suing the publisher, and both attended a pre-trial hearing in 2023.
The couple have said in witness statements that they were told by actress Elizabeth Hurley, their friend and fellow claimant, about allegations they had been targeted by ANL.
The couple allege their home telephone was tapped by a private investigator on behalf of the publisher, and Sir Elton alleged in his statement that there had been a “deliberate invasion into my medical health and medical details surrounding the birth of our son”. He described this as “abhorrent and outside even the most basic standards of human decency”.
Hurley, an actress, model and businesswoman, alleges her phones were tapped and microphones were placed on her home windows – and described the alleged invasion of her privacy as “brutal”.
In her allegations, actress Sadie Frost accused Daily Mail journalists of being “cold-blooded” regarding stories about her split with ex-husband Jude Law and their son’s medical treatment.
In a witness statement, she said Law believed it was her leaking information about their divorce.
“It is a horrible feeling, having the person you love accusing you of something you did not do and having to receive phone calls accusing you or your friends of leaking information,” Frost said.
After the murder of Stephen Lawrence in 1993, the Daily Mail ran a campaign calling for justice.
His mother, Baroness Doreen Lawrence, alleges the publisher of the Daily Mail was at the same time “unlawfully obtain[ing] information about the investigation into her son’s killing”.
In court documents, lawyer David Sherborne alleged unlawful actions included “bugging and covert surveillance, the obtaining of her and her family’s telephone records, the payment of corrupt police officers for confidential information relating to her son’s murder investigation” and monitoring of her bank accounts to check whether she was working with other newspapers during the Justice for Stephen Lawrence campaign.
Former Liberal Democrat politician Sir Simon Hughes is also suing ANL.
It is alleged the publisher paid a private investigator to unlawfully track down the address of a man it believed was his lover.
Mr Sherborne said in written submissions that “the Mail on Sunday wanted a photograph” of the man so it could run a story about their relationship.
